Lecanto Sand is currently conducting sand mining activities on a 25-acre parcel already zoned Extractive that the company believes has valid legal authority for mining based upon its historical use as a sand mine and through nonconforming use principles. To eliminate any uncertainty regarding the current operation, Lecanto Sand has also applied for a mining permit for that parcel. The company is not currently accepting vegetative debris on any of its properties. Lecanto Sand previously sought approval to expand extractive zoning to an additional 45 acres adjacent to its current mining operation. That request was denied following concerns raised regarding the permitting status of the company's existing operations. Lecanto Sand disagrees with several of the assertions made during that process and welcomes the opportunity to address them through the legal and administrative processes now available. Our objective is not continued conflict with Citrus County. We want to work constructively with County officials to resolve the outstanding legal issues, establish clearly what activities are permitted on the property, and determine whether an acceptable path forward exists for the proposed expansion.
